Down South (2013)

Portions of this deep mix have had its fair share of attention before I finally got around to posting it.

It’s been been featured on Lars Behrenroth’s Deeper Shades of House, Spain’s Dogglounge, and Trevor Lamont’s House is Home of Lexington, KY.

Here finally is the full 2.5 hr set. This mix was warped, mangled and mashed up using Ableton Live over a week’s studio time. I created a series of YouTube videos explaining portions of what I did, as I did it. Full tracklisting available on dylandrazen.com.

Eleganza 2 (2012)

Featured

It took some years to find the right music for the sequel to 2007’s Eleganza. I usually don’t play entire sets of emotional music like this, as I would normally include a track or two after a set of intense melodyless beats. That was the idea behind part 1 as well.

This mix holds sentimental value, as it was the final one recorded at Triboro Studio in NYC before making the trek down to Miami with my cat Ouisie, who passed away the day before posting this. As I was packing away, I’d work on this to offset the moving experience over the course of a month.

So I dedicate this mix to you, Ouisie, my techno kitty, for putting up with over 10 years of beats. You must have been bred with a taste for electronic music, as you’d nap like a champ over my loud studio year after year.

Foundation (2008)

This mix belongs with Over & Out as an interesting turning point in my taste as a DJ. I wasn’t only interested in super hard techno or soulful deep house. I was finally starting to cross over into more accessible styles. But the two mixes hold personal meaning too, as they helped one of my best friends through a difficult period in his life.

In 2008, I wrote:

“originally recorded for the funk-u show on livesets.com broadcast on august 28, 2008. this is an extention of over & out, but heads into more serious territory later on. you could say this is my take on this whole minimal craze. while i don’t see myself playing entire minimal sets, i do see myself working its sound into a broader set. foundation finishes up with a minimix of the best work from mike dehnert, probably the most important new techno artist of the year.”

it took two years to find music good enough to be justified for this mix. i was always afraid to make a sequel to valley stream because of how that mix affected me. it really inspired me on an emotional level, much like 2003’s only deep. i didn’t want to disappoint myself. it’s also why i never made another ambient mix after nightrain to berlin in 1997. but then one day i was looking through my intelligent playlist and was amazed at all these brilliant, emotionally charged tracks. it was time.

Beach Party 5 (2009)

I admit it, this set was not actually recorded live at a beach party, despite my old website’s claim of it being “performed live at Jones Beach Field 6, June 2009.” In fact, it was one of the very first mixes I made using Ableton Live. I forced myself to learn because I was laid up in bed for a week hopped up on Percocet after having all four wisdom teeth extracted. I made good use of my time.
