In October of '96 I took a night train from Paris to Berlin. It was my first night train experience. A friend of mine lent me an ambient mixtape for the week. This mixtape became the utter soundtrack of that experience. Of all the electronic DJing and mixtapes done currently, the idea of the ambient mixtape has been hugely overlooked. I realized this when I heard this tape, in the middle of nowhere, trusting the train to take me halfway across Europe at 4am. Most of the pieces on this tape are either not beat centered or are beatless entirely. The sounds are abstract, environmental. Moods range from dark, threatening, inspirational, beautiful, strange, surreal. Sources include turntables, a microcassette, CD, and a VCR. The sounds aren't only records. The collage is a deliberate expression. I hope to change some of the ways the convention of the mixtape is thought about with this project. Largely new music with a few old wise ones placed in.
